Eggbert by LAF . . . Just who is LAF?

LAF is actually Lester A. Friedman, a businessman who loved drawing cartoons on cocktail napkins.  In fact, that’s how Eggbert was born. He came to the attention of Mr. Percy Barker who was the owner of Monogram of California, a company that printed humorous cocktail napkins (among other things). Eggbert’s cocktail napkins were an instant hit.  They were so much of a hit that, in 1959, the first Eggbert book was published. Seems so long ago but the humor in these cartoons is every bit as great now as it was then. A few of the cartoon captions have been updated to be more topical, but the majority of them remain the same.

A little about the Eggbert books . . .

All the Eggbert books, new and original, say “Cartoons by LAF” on the covers. LAF is actually Lester E. Friedman, a San Francisco businessman whose idle doodling led to the delightful Eggbert cartoons which first saw the light of day on cocktail napkins published by Monogram of California, owned by Percy Barker.

The original books can still be found on both eBay and Amazon. But you need to be careful if you are interested in buying the originals. Most of the new books I’m offering through Amazon also have available used copies. If you look closely at the descriptions of these used books, you will find that they are actually the originals – be sure to note the publishing dates and especially how they are described.

I have contacted some of these booksellers to let them know that there IS a difference but there’s so many, I finally gave up doing that. ALL of the new books will have a border on the front and back covers ... mainly so they will be easily distinguishable from the original books. ALSO … at the bottom of the new book front covers it says … “EGGBERT’S DIARY For Expectant Moms”.

Confused? I hope not!
